A Taste of the North Pole in City Heights
Our elves brought festive fun to the field at Ibarra this past weekend.
We had one of the best turn-outs of students at Saturday’s Cocoa & Cookies. The kids were eager for the festivities they knew that we had prepared all for them.
It may have been the warm, fuzzy socks. Or the brightly colored blankets. Or maybe it was the warm cocoa and halal marshmallows that were so thoughtfully prepared for each of our students. For some, it was definitely the tables of toys that they perused with rather serious faces, determined to take home the perfect one. There wasn’t a student who left without holiday cheer, which emanated from the over 70 jolly elves who brought a taste of the North Pole to City Heights.
The beauty of this event is that it wasn’t just a toy and food giveaway event for the community at large. The kids that we invited to it are the same kids we have been investing in all year on Tuesday and Thursday nights. In fact, we’ve been investing in many of them for years and years! Our kids have relationships with these amazing elves. And, the elves actually do far more than distribute holiday items at the end of trimesters. They invest in our kids’ futures by giving their time each and every week. That holiday cheer wasn’t just seasonal cheer. We’ll be spreading cheer at SDRT all the way through June.

It was a TEAM Effort!
Thank you to the incredible team of individuals that purchased items, received items at their homes, set up the event, hauled a zillion things, manned stations, and broke things down afterwards.
An additional thank you to the organizations who rallied their people and gave large donations, including Kensington Community Church, Hope for San Diego, Girls in STEAM SD, Hope4Kids, Sprouts in Chula Vista/the Cohn family, and St. James by the Sea. These groups collectively provided family gift cards, groceries for every family, blankets, new and used books, and presents for our students, near and far. We could not have pulled off this event without such a kind community.
We appreciate your generosity.
