The Latest at SDRT

From postponing Bike Day to distance learning, read what is going on at SDRT this week.

Though our students (and tutors) would love nothing more than to get some fresh air and exercise right about now, we must postpone our Annual Bike Day that was planned for April 4th. We are so bummed. We hope to get together and pull off Bike Day just as soon as it is safe to do so! We will let you know when we have it rescheduled.

Thanks to TEAM SDRT, over 60 SDRT students attended Ibarra’s first Food Distribution yesterday. This will be provided daily Monday through Friday from 11-1pm at Ibarra Elementary. TEAM SDRT helped solve one of our family’s crises this week: a broken fridge. With a little advocacy and some showing up, things got done and a family that has been going without a fridge for too long, can now store food for their nine family members! TEAM SDRT has fortunately been able to make contact with every single one of our families since our last tutoring session almost two weeks ago. We have shared with them how much you all care about them, too! TEAM SDRT delivered a few more grocery loads to families in need this week (totaling over 25 loads) and the best news yet: our kids are asking for homework and books! They must really be bored! Or perhaps they genuinely miss learning! Good news either way!

We are getting creative on how to get our students books and homework. SDUSD announced that distance learning will begin for our students on May 11. We are thinking about what our students can do in the meantime (this is a very long break for year round schools). It will take awhile for the district to provide them with computer devices and ensure that they have Internet connectivity. The majority of our students are without computers and connectivity.

Thanks to all of you for reaching out, sharing your ideas and donating!
