The weather was not exactly frightful. A fire would NOT have been delightful. But we did slap Santa hats on anyway and spread holiday cheer last week at tutoring despite the 80 degree San Diego December weather. We decorated those cookies with mounds of frosting and a sea of sprinkles. We melted those marshmallows in cocoa and sipped to our hearts content. And, yes, there were PRESENTS. Almost 100 kids anxiously awaited the beloved gifts that so many of you kindly sent us. Baby dolls, hoodies, soccer balls, art sets and gift cards were at the top of our kids’ lists this year.

Did we still have tutoring? Yes. We learned AND celebrated. It was extra special because the kids got to make fun memories with their tutors and still get homework and reading done.
SDRT is here for the long haul. We have events like holiday nights but keep our focus on helping our kids move forward academically. Our kids know (and have told us) that they love that we give them good things. The learning, the books, the treats, the field trips, the self esteem, the confidence, the community—the total package.

Thank you for helping us make Holiday Nights happen. A special thanks to our gift purchasers (many of you), Kensington Community Church, Flood Church and Hope For San Diego. All students received a gift and new books, many titles our kids asked for and we ordered specifically for them. Each of our families received two gifts—a grocery gift card and a large blanket.
