We Hit the Ice This Weekend!

One of our goals at SDRT is to give our kids wonderful childhood memories. This weekend, 75 students and volunteers took our third trip to the ice skating rink and accomplished our goal!

We were prepared with gloves, long socks, hot cocoa and plenty of volunteers to help our students on the ice this past Saturday. For some volunteers, their jobs mainly consisted of helping a few up off the ice! A couple students actually enjoyed falling as they had never experienced that icy cold feeling from head to toe (and knew they would get help up!). We even had the joy of watching one volunteer learn to ice skate- a brave soul. Some students got lucky and had near professionals teaching them to skate- SDRT has some talented ice skaters among us! Others gripped the walls as long as they possibly could, slowly building courage to venture out into the busy track of skaters.

One of the best pictures was seeing a regular volunteer assist his middle school student all along the track. Watching them build trust in the classroom and then on the ice was priceless.

All in all, there were no serious injuries (phew!), lots of smiles, some very sore feet, and many requests to do it again next year.

If you would like to join us on another one of these outings, we have the City Heights Runners 5K & Fun Run as well as Bike Day coming up next! Be sure to register as a volunteer now!
