We finished the year strong!

June 2026

The End of the Road

We have come to the end of the road (for now!). We finished out the year so strong thanks to each and every one of you! From banana split sundaes to Surfrider pizza (and maybe a little bit of soccer!), we celebrated a fantastic school year together. One student remarked that the last day of tutoring was, “The best event ever!”

Kids young and old adored looking at photos of themselves from the year and making their very own photo albums. All backpacks were stuffed with summer reading materials, art supplies and even their own art from the year. We sent everyone off with joy and promised to be back next year.

It took 426 volunteers this year to pull off 48 tutoring sessions and many spectacular events. Thank you to the hundreds of generous donors who allow SDRT to support our students and their families. A rich, diverse, loving community was created this year and we look forward to it being sustained in the years to come. We hope you and your people will join us in the fall again for fun-filled events and productive tutoring sessions!

The Kids are Growing Up

We start to feel like great aunts and uncles around here as we make syrupy remarks like, “I can’t believe you are already graduating!” and “You are SO tall!” And, to the high school graduate, “I remember when you were in first grade!” But the truth is, we are flabbergasted! The kids really are growing up!

There are about 40 of us who have been at SDRT for 5-15 years and we remember these kids when they were learning to tie their shoes, spell their names, learning the alphabet, etc. Now they are pursuing higher education, going to 4 year universities, and moving on to the school down the road. Good news: We still plan to be here and support them. Whether it is tutoring in middle or high school or a scholarship after high school, SDRT is here for the long haul. Truth be told, we even tutor a handful of community college students!

It was a privilege to distribute gifts to our 5th, 8th and 12 grade graduates. Huge thanks to Hope For San Diego and all of their volunteers who helped make those happen!
