“They should do this twice a year!”
Thanks to the generosity of our partners Hope for San Diego, SDRT hosted another Summer Field Day and Picnic event for our students on the Ibarra soccer field!
We’ve done this event year after year with creative variations during the pandemic, and each summer, the students and volunteers experience togetherness as a village in so many ways. We laugh together, play together, sweat in that July heat together, and eat together. This year was no different, and we were thrilled to have a more “normal” picnic in person with optional masks and so much fun.
From Steal the “Bacon,” to the giant inflatable obstacle course, to sponge ball games, and NY-style giant pizzas, each one of the seven stations through which students rotated hosted an exciting or tasty activity. One volunteer heard a student say, “They should do this twice a year,” as they were leaving the field–a testimony that the event accomplished what it sought out to do: impart summer fun and joy to our students!
As the planning team reflected on the day, we were all completely blown away by the students’ amazing behavior. They were all respectful and cheerful team players, and the reason is that in addition to being great kids, they felt safe with familiar adults who tutor and volunteer with SDRT year after year. Trust is key in building resilient children up academically, socially, mentally, and emotionally. We are proud to say that our students trust SDRT, and we are committed to maintaining their trust.
We’d love to have you register with us as a tutor in the upcoming school year so that you can contribute to the safety and trust that our students feel with SDRT.
We are a village. Come join us!
