Knowledge is Power

May 2025

Empowering Families

SDRT was founded on the idea that knowledge is power. Not only do we want our students to gain knowledge through their educations so they can choose their own futures, we also want our parents to gain knowledge about their children’s education.

This year, we held three parent empowerment trainings, one was this month.

We had the privilege of sharing our students’ reading and math progress with parents. We shared their child’s most recent assessment results, what skills their students need to work on, and how we will support them at tutoring. We also gave them many practical ideas of how they can support their students at home.

One highlight was hearing how one mom shared in her native tongue with another mom about how she helped her struggling son improve. She gave this mom practical ideas to implement that she had success with! Parents helping parents who speak the same language is a huge victory. We also provided a summer workbook for this mom to work on with her first grade son who is quickly falling behind.

Another highlight was seeing several parents come to one of these meetings for the very first time. They even took pictures of the slides we presented!

And yet another bright spot: multiple parents thanked us for the important information that they could understand in their own languages thanks to the many translators.

We are on our way!

Carrying the educational work of SDRT into our students’ homes is a long process. It starts with parents and families understanding more about expectations, the American education system, and how they can help. We are here as a resource and want them to reach out, ask questions and join their students’ educational journeys.
