Keep On Keeping On

As our heads and hurts hurt for what is going on in our country, the work of SDRT continues…

As we fight for educational justice for our students at SDRT, we acknowledge that they deserve so much more and we work tirelessly to bridge these gaps. We have seen so many tutors step up in some really huge ways this past month. We are grateful for your hearts, your passions and your remarkable persistence. Our kids feel supported by you and your work with and for them.

We now receive loads of near perfect, kid-friendly produce every other week donated by Sprouts in Chula Vista. TEAM SDRT checks in on our families while delivering these healthy snacks into the hands of our smiling children.

TEAM SDRT communicates with our families regularly. With some very slow Internets out there, Zoom meetings and online work has proved very difficult. Advocating for hotspots and physically helping families go get them has been possible only because of TEAM SDRT.

The month of Ramadan ended last week with a 3-day celebration called Eid complete with scrumptious feasts, beautiful henna and long awaited gifts.

Our kids continue to complete our paper homework packets (in addition to their online learning, hopefully!) and TEAM SDRT happily delivers prizes upon completion. For some lacking the basic skills that are necessary building blocks for their learning, we are bringing resources such as these flashcards (these were for an 8th and 10th grader). TEAM SDRT is also doing our best to check up on these students to see if they are actually studying them! TEAM SDRT might be calling a few students daily to wake them up for school!

Outside the Lens resumed their Wednesday Photography/Videography Club on Zoom! Our 3rd-5th grade students are delighted! Thanks, Semoria (top left) and Jana (top right) for leading this!

Shoutout to Michele and Dr. Denio

Dr. Denio is a former US Navy and now retired endodontist. He closed his doors this past Thursday after practicing endodontics since 1991, and guess who was his absolute last patient of his entire career was? One of OUR high school students! We are so touched by his generosity in providing a pro-bono root canal to our very own. Our student is now on a dental health journey thanks to one of our amazing tutors, Michele. Michele reached out to her dentist and asked if they would provide a pro-bono service, and a superhero team of dental professionals have come together to help!

Thank you, Michele and Dr. Denio! We’ll give you another update on this student with another shoutout to the pro-bono professionals who are helping her achieve a more confident smile.

We will keep on keeping on, on behalf of the beautiful children we serve. Thanks for your spectacular support.

Please go here if you would like to contribute financially to the work of SDRT.
