Full Circle

October 2026

We just had a recent high school graduate sign up for our upcoming New Tutor Orientation. He is ready to give back and help his younger peers— and he still wants to be a part of the SDRT community. This ‘full circle moment’ first happened during the pandemic.

Though Paw Say, an 11th grader, moved to Minnesota in 2020, she still came to receive support at tutoring via Zoom despite the time difference. She actually came twice a week, in order to spend one tutoring session giving instead of receiving. She knew what it was like to receive much needed help and was willing to offer that support to others. She had an instant connection with her first grade Karen student, with no cultural barriers.

That seems to be the case for all of our students that come back to tutor our kids. They can connect on a deep level, having been in those shoes at one time. It also helps that students think they are “young and cool!”

We are proud to say that we have had seven students already come full circle and become the ones in the supportive role at San Diego Refugee Tutoring. That is what we want for our kids and our community. We dream of our kids one day becoming adults and being the ones in charge of SDRT! We already have two employed here–Yasmin and Habon.
