Fridays Are Always Fun!
At SDRT, Fridays are always fun. Students continue to look forward to the crafts, recipes, experiments, or activities that are planned specially for them and delivered straight to their door. This month, we had three incredible groups of volunteers lead three activities: journals and origami bookmarks, jellyfish crafts, and rice krispy treats.
Our very own tutors, Catherine and Zoe, rallied friends to put together the materials to make personalized journals with accompanying origami bookmarks. Our third through sixth graders had a blast gluing colorful pom-poms on the covers of the journals, and one student even drew an excellent Spongebob Square Pants! If you have ever done origami, it is challenging enough to teach someone in person; on Zoom, it’s even more challenging! But our students did not give up. They split off into breakout rooms with our volunteer instructors and patiently followed directions to fold an intricate koala bookmark! Thank you to Catherine and Zoe and their crew for this Fun Friday! Our students love to tap into their creativity!
Next, Jenna and her team organized a jellyfish craft for our first through third graders! They were even presented a detailed and thorough lesson of marine wildlife. Students asked engaging questions during the presentation even though many of them were fasting all day for Ramadan! Are jellyfish poisonous? Do they have eyes? Do they have a brain? During the segment when students colored their jellyfish tops, you could hear a pin-drop on the Zoom! Students were in the ZONE. Thank you Jenna and crew!
And lastly, Andy and his dedicated group executed a hands-on cooking lesson to make rice krispy treats with our middle and high school students. Our students LOVE to cook (and eat!). The instructors planned an effective breakout room system where students were able to make the treats in small groups with their own instructor. With the addition of extra supplies, students were able to decorate their rice krispies with a customized beach scene! One of our students is a purist and preferred the classic rice krispy treat without the additional decor. That’s the best part about Fun Friday; it allows our students to express themselves freely within a successful structure. Only halal ingredients were purchased specially for our kids. Thank you to Andy and his team!
THANK YOU to all of the volunteers and donors who make Fun Fridays a reality. Our students ask about it each week at tutoring because it is a special activity that has been made a part of their weekly routine. This is only possible with the generous support of our volunteers who plan and lead each activity and donors who fund our programming. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
