Bored at Home? Not Us!
Look what SDRT came up with to break up the monotony of the Covid season.
Is it that special coffee, Thai takeout, a walk on the beach, or a socially distant visit with a friend–or some combination of small treats that are getting you through this isolating time? We are lowering our expectations and getting creative to break up the long days that turn into weeks that turn into months during this time of Covid. We all need something to look forward to! Most of our students haven’t left their homes for four months. They hardly even take walks. It is an isolating, terribly boring time for many. Without the social interaction that school and tutoring provided, most are left with not much to look forward to.
And then came a tutor’s brilliant idea: Fun Fridays. The plan: Deliver all the necessary ingredients and supplies to each child who wants to participate. Then, meet up on Zoom on Friday nights at 7pm and teach our students something new!
On the night we launched, many used measuring cups for the first time while making gooey, chocolate oatmeal no-bake cookies. Then, our board member’s sister took the idea to a new level and taught our kids how to make kimbap (Korean sushi), complete with bamboo mats, aprons, seaweed and chopsticks.
Third, the kids focused intently as they created paper lanterns using popsicle sticks, tracing paper, creativity and a battery tea light. They were proud of their final products thanks to one generous tutor.
This past Friday, it was Ice Cream Science with an actual scientist (who also happens to be a tutor). She wore her lab coat and safety goggles and shared her passion with us. After a whole lot of shaking (our biceps definitely grew!), we each enjoyed a bowl of vanilla ice cream with sprinkles while learning about water, salt and their properties.
We had a fantastic turnout at each one, with numbers increasing each week. 26 kids ranging from kindergarten students to high school students attended this week! They all want to know when the next one will be.
If you have an idea for a Fun Friday that you and your people can pull off (get supplies/ingredients, make instructions/recipe, sort items for each kid involved and lead a Zoom), let us know! We plan to start these up in the fall!
Email Melissa at [email protected] with your potential plans. We hope to pick at least 5 of you all to help lead these from your very own home!
